My mentor once told me, “Time is not your most valuable asset, your focus is.” He then explained what he meant by that.
Many successful individuals often tell us that time is crucial and we should do our best to use it wisely. Because once it’s lost, it can never be retrieved.
It’s definitely true, but what really matters is where you put your attention, not just how much time you have. Even with plenty of time available, many people struggle to make the most of it due to a lack of focus.
In the world we live in now, distractions are everywhere. When we try to concentrate on something, many other things try to grab our attention, making it hard to stay focused.
It could be emails, messages, social media, or friends competing for our attention.
When we can’t focus our time because of lots of distractions, it’s called Shallow Work.
Many of us only do shallow work, so we can’t create or build things that help us reach our goals.
We’re often pulled in different directions, making it hard to focus on just one thing.
When riding your bike, your attention is on something other than the road.
You make a to-do list for the next day but can’t finish all the tasks.
You sit down to do something very important but can’t finish it by the end of the day.
It’s common for most people because we’re distracted almost every hour of the day.
If you’re also someone who wants to improve your focus, let me introduce you to another idea called “Deep Work.”
Deep work means concentrating on complex tasks without interruptions.
When you engage in deep work, you can finish almost any difficult task quickly.
JK Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, spent about six months writing the book in a luxurious 5-star hotel called The Balmoral. During this time, she stayed away from social media to focus on her book. Now the room is known as the JK Rowling Suite.
Microsoft CEO Bill Gates has something called “Think Week.” Twice a year, he isolates himself to do nothing but read and think. During Think Week, Bill Gates does deep work that has greatly helped Microsoft succeed.
Many successful people credit deep work as the main reason for their success because it allows them to concentrate on complex tasks without interruptions.
We should definitely learn and apply the concept of deep work in our lives, as it’s greatly needed in this generation. Now, let me share how you can use deep work in your life, based on my personal experience.
1. Discover the time that suits you best for deep work
Some people are most focused in the morning, while others are at their best in the evening. It’s important to find your ideal time for deep work when you can concentrate fully.
2. Complete complex tasks during your deep work sessions
We often spend our time checking emails, replying to them, and scrolling through social media, among other things.
If those tasks are part of your responsibilities, handle them at another time. When you’re in your deep work mode, focus solely on complex tasks. They demand your full attention and concentration.
3. Find a quiet place where you can work without distractions
When you’re doing deep work, go to a room alone, ask your family or friends not to disturb you until you’re done, and put your phone on airplane mode.
This is the most effective way to stay focused when you don’t want any interruptions.
4. Delete social media apps from your phone
Deep work is all about tackling complex tasks with focus and attention. However, social media can drain that power from you.
Delete social media apps from your phone. You can still use them on your laptop but avoid accessing them from your phone. This will help protect your valuable time and focus from those addictive platforms.
5. Focus on one thing at a time
We’re skilled at multitasking, like eating while watching TV, scrolling through social media while using the bathroom, or riding a bike while talking on the phone.
However, multitasking can harm your focus. When you do multiple things at once, you can’t concentrate on one thing effectively.
Therefore, focus on doing just one thing at a time. When you’re eating, just eat. When riding a bike, concentrate on the road. And when you’re in the bathroom, leave your phone behind.
This practice will help you concentrate on one task at a time, gradually improving your focus and attention.
Conclusion
Deep work is a crucial skill in today’s digital age. The better you become at it, the more you can accomplish in your life.
I hope this article provided you with an understanding of the concept of deep work and its significance in your life.

I am satisfy with your opinion and thought. Nowdays we are fully engaged with social media like Instagram to see reels, youtube shorts and so on . It is a way to time pass and entertain but its are the source of distraction of our focus or concentration on out work.
For example ; we are doing homework and we heard the notification of social media , we just start to scroll instagram reels , tiktok , youtube shorts ,and so on. so we are distract to do homework.
like this social media is also one of the distraction point of view on our concentration or focus . thank you!
Glad you liked it Shristi. But rather than motivation I would suggest you to implement these things in your life that will eventually lead you to build a habit.
Remember habit is greater than motivation.
“Even though many of us believe that time is the most valuable thing in our lives, our focus is equally crucial. Learning to focus on one thing at a time is essential. For example, riding a bike without focusing can lead to accidents, and that time is lost forever. So, to save our time, it’s important to focus on one thing.”
